Connaught@Christmas had a magical opening weekend with perfect weather, clear and cold. As darkness fell, the gardens became alive with enchanting light displays.

The lighting enhances the plants and architecture of Connaught gardens: the bandstand jam-packed with the prettiest sparkling Christmas trees; tall trees and feature plants beautifully enhanced with colour, stunning light-changing globes stretching across the main lawns, charmingly lit cactus house and pretty projections across Sidmouth’s beaches. Each area of the garden has a different theme and lighting effects, and there are plenty of amazing photo opportunities.

All the children were excited to follow a trail of reindeer hoofprints which brought them Father Christmas and a magical snow garden. Lots of older folk also enjoyed having a chat with this famous visitor too!

After visiting the gardens, there’s a chance to warm up with a hot drink and delicious street food in the marquee in Manor Road car park and take a look at a wide range of locally made items from jewellery to fudge, gins to artwork.

Visitors left enthusiastic reviews on social media.

On Instagram, @devonmama said “Such beautifully lit gardens and a surprise snowy wonderland with special guest appearance from the big guy himself. I mean seriously, an actual winter wonderland. We followed the reindeer hoof trail (some of us VERY enthusiastically). Magic. Would definitely go again.”

Katie McGivern said: “Perfect balance for the little ones, plenty to keep them excited and the surprise of seeing Santa topped it off.”

On Facebook, Maria McCarthy said: “So beautiful last night - and the marquee is cosy for warming up with a drink and food.”

On opening night visitors enjoyed the sounds of Sidmouth Town Band on Friday while Rock Choir performed on Sunday. Sidmouth Town Band is playing again on Friday December 16.

The event runs until Sunday December 18. While tickets to the gardens can be bought at the event, pre-booking is recommended to guarantee a specific time slot.
