Japanese student nurses visit Derriford Hospital

A group of student nurses from the Red Cross Toyota College of Nurses in Japan, visited Derriford Hospital yesterday as part of their annual trip to Plymouth.

Throughout the visit, the students were given presentations on the role of a health care assistant and a registered nurse, a demonstration from the manual handling team and were also shown around the

Critical Care Unit, the Haematology/Oncology wards and Elderly care wards.

Henrietta Ferguson, Placement Development and Mentorship Lead, said: “This year the Trust has welcomed 13 Japanese nursing students and their two teachers from The Japanese Red Cross & Toyota College of Nursing, to Derriford.

“The nurses have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the roles of registered nurses and health care assistants in the Trust and were amazed at the varied roles and responsibilities they have. The manual handling team kindly gave them a demonstration of the equipment used to facilitate moving our patients and there was also an opportunity to visit some of the wards.

“Thank you to Sarah Hockey, Alison Brewer, Peter Branfield, Sue Ives, Kirsty Jenkins & Sharon Russell who have helped to facilitate their visit.”

This was the fourth year that Japanese students have visited the Trust. During their three-week stay, the students live with local families, they take English lessons in Mayflower College and visit other medical institutions and local attractions throughout their trip.
