Visitors can enjoy a new Halloween experience at National Trust Knightshayes Court, in Devon, this October Half Term.

From now until 3 November, the house and gardens have been transformed. The estate is bursting with illusion and folklore, celebrating local legends and the Victorian obsession with the paranormal.

Built at the height of the Gothic Revival, Knightshayes, with its fairytale turrets and quirky interiors, has the perfect atmosphere for a Halloween adventure. With adventures inside and out to keep the whole family entertained, it’s a must visit this October Half Term.

Discover optical illusions and mysterious atmospheres in the house as each room on the ground floor offers visitors a different experience. Find out how the Victorians created the illusion of spirits floating in the air, why they were so intrigued by shadows, and what exactly a zoetrope is.

The Halloween atmosphere continues in the garden, where visitors can explore magical tales of Devon folklore on a trail through the grounds. Follow the will o the wisps to find the headless horseman’s horse, follow the mysterious footprints that have appeared in the woodland, or hear the chilling tale of the Tarr Steps.

Staying in the garden, there’s also the opportunity to take part in Knightshayes’ Leaf Quest. Visitors can pick up a Leaf Quest sheet and discover all the different shapes and colours in the fallen leaves around Knightshayes, all while decorating a nature crown to wear.

“We’re really harnessing the essence of Victorian Gothic and illusion this Halloween,” says Claire Forkes, Visitor Operations and Experience Manager. “We’re hoping to bring visitors a new way to experience Knightshayes.”

“It’s been so exciting to create a new Halloween experience that brings together the character of the house and local area for everyone to enjoy,” she continues. “Knightshayes has such a unique atmosphere at this time of year and it’s great to be channelling that. I can’t wait for people to come and enjoy it.”

The house at Knightshayes is open 11am-4pm with the gardens and Stables open 10am-5pm from now until 3 November.
