Ottery St Mary will be experiencing spookiness in the cutest possible way when Coldharbour hosts its ‘Spooky Sausage Saturday’ on October 26.

After the success of the inaugural sausage get together in August, the Field Kitchen is once again throwing its doors - and paddock - open to dinky Dachshunds and their owners. But this time there’s a seasonal twist.

Sausage owner and co-owner of the Field Kitchen, Beth Ashfield explained: “Given the time of year we’re hoping that lots of the sausages will come dressed in their best Halloween outfits. I’m thinking bats, wizards, spiders and ghosts – the spookier the better!”

Coldharbour resident Dachshund cross Jack Russell Nellie Barker is determined to grab the spotlight and has already been spotted trying on her pumpkin outfit ready for the day.

The event is being held in response to requests from sausage owners who were unable to get along to the first Sausage Saturday. “We had lots of messages asking us to do it all again and we just couldn’t resist.”

It seems sausage dog owners really enjoy meeting up and swapping sausage stories; earlier in October over 1,000 dachshunds took part in the annual Southwold Sausage Walk in Suffolk, with some owners from as far afield as Florida.

“As far as I’m aware, we’re not expecting any sausages from across the pond at Coldharbour, but you never know – they really celebrate Halloween big time in the States!” laughed Beth.

There’s no cost to come along to the Spooky Sausage Saturday but visitors will be encouraged to make a contribution to fundraising for DMT Dachshund Rescue, the UK based registered charity which rescues Dachshunds from kill shelters and the meat trade in Asia.

While the Field Kitchen is open from 9am, the spooky sausage gathering takes place from 2pm to 4pm, with Puppachinos and dog treats available for the sausages. Other dog breeds also welcome!
