Greystone Bridge near Tavistock to be closed for essential repairs
Essential repairs will be carried out to Greystone Bridge on the B3362 in west Devon from Monday 25 July, with the road due to be closed for two weeks.
The Grade 1 Listed bridge, between Tavistock and Launceston, was damaged by trees and debris that had washed into the River Tamar during stormy conditions last November, leaving one of the granite piers with a void towards its base.
Although the bridge’s structure was not impacted, a protective shield was installed on the damaged pier as a temporary measure to prevent further erosion.
Weather permitting, permanent repairs are scheduled to get underway on Monday (25 July) and are expected to be completed by Sunday 7 August.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “This is the earliest opportunity that we’ve had to carry out this essential repair work. As this medieval bridge is listed, consent is required to work on it and the repairs that are needed can only be done at this time of year when water levels are lower. The emergency measures that were installed last winter have ensured that the bridge has been protected and hasn’t sustained any further damage over the past few months.”
Councillor Debo Sellis, Devon County Councillor for Tavistock, said: “I can understand residents and holiday makers will no doubt be frustrated by the closure and detour routes. This fine bridge has been used for centuries and our modern world will need to be patient whilst it is repaired.”
During the road closure, the diversion route will be signed via the B3362 Gulworthy, A390 Gunnislake and Callington, A388 Launceston and vice versa.
