Rose Bruniges, 101st Birthday, East Street Care Home

Great Grandmother Celebrates 101st Birthday

Great grandmother, Rose Bruniges, celebrated her 101st birthday with a tea party at the East Street Care Home in South Molton, Devon. Rose was joined by family, friends and the caring team to celebrate her milestone birthday and East Street provided cupcakes, tea and balloons.

Born in Islington, London, in 1924, Rose was only 15 when the Second World War broke out in 1939.  Islington suffered significant damage during the Blitz and Rose vividly recalls sleeping in bomb shelter basements and hearing the warnings that Hitler was coming.

Following the war, Rose worked in the Black Cat Cigarette factory in Camden town.  When she was 19 she married her childhood sweetheart, cobbler, Jim Bruniges and they had two boys, Alan and Barry.  Rose and Alan were married for nearly half a century until his death in 1992.  Rose now has a multi-generational family with two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Rose has been at East Street for a year and she enjoys the live music, family visits and chatting to her friends.

Commenting on reaching her 101st birthday Rose said:

“I think the secret to a long and happy life is finding a good husband and always having a kiss before bed.  I suspect my children and grandchildren have helped to keep me young, and a regular Baileys keeps me in good spirits.

“It was lovely to celebrate my birthday with my loved ones around me and many thanks to the caring team here at East Street for making it all happen.”

Sarah Coull, East Street home manager said:

“It has been our pleasure to join Rose and her family and friends in marking this milestone birthday.

“Rose is a very popular member the East Street family and she still manages to take a full and active part in life at the home.”
