Explore Devon the naturally healthy way
A new website has been created to help visitors and residents get out and explore Devon’s green spaces, promoting everything from a gentle woodland stroll to an invigorating bike ride, from spotting our celebrated wildlife to discovering ancient geology.
The new website, www.exploredevon.info, has been launched by Devon County Council to bring together ideas for things to do and places to go to be more naturally active outdoors while enjoying Devon’s fantastic natural environment.
The website also supports the ‘Naturally Healthy’ theme of the Devon Local Nature Partnership.
Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Improving Health and Wellbeing said: “Devon’s natural environment provides the most wonderful opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to get out and about to discover new interests and places, all of which can have a very positive effect on improving our health and well-being.
“Simply being out and enjoying somewhere special helps us feel happier and more connected to nature, whether that’s at our beaches, in our countryside or on our moors. It can make our mind, body and soul feel good.”
Explore Devon promotes the longer distance walking and cycling routes that have been developed by the County Council and also includes multi-use routes for safe and easy walking and cycling, as well as a wide variety of accessible walking trails suitable for families with young children and pushchairs, or older people and wheelchair users.
It also encourages discovery of new activities, whether that’s bird watching, going on a bug safari with the children, rock pooling, or uncovering fossils along the Jurassic Coast.
The website provides a quick overview of the type of terrain likely to be encountered en route. Maps can be downloaded for reference, and directions and parking information, details of local facilities, and links to bus time tables, are all available.
