To mark its 25th anniversary in August 2014, the UK’s largest independent furniture retailer Furniture Village (www.furniturevillage.co.uk) teamed-up with the UK’s most popular parenting website, Netmums (www.netmums.com), to devise a competition where children had the opportunity to design a future invention. With over 700 entries during 4 weeks, 8 children were selected as winners (2 each week).

Furniture Village challenged Netmums users to ask their children to propose what might (or should) be invented in the future. Amongst the submissions were some truly innovative and thoughtful ideas. The initial inspiration behind the competition was to encourage children across the UK to use their imagination, think outside the box and come up with inventions that might be featured in homes in years to come.

Evie Wilkins, seven, from  Yelverton with Ruby the Robot, was one of eight lucky children selected as final winners, and Furniture Village awarded them for their innovations.

Cathy Ranson, Editor-in-Chief at Netmums says: “The competition proved very popular amongst users and we were impressed by the large volume of entries received. We are delighted by the quality of the admissions and we hope that the winners were pleased to have been selected.”

The prize for each winner was an Apple iPad mini and £2,500 worth of vouchers for their home, to spend in-store or online at Furniture Village (www.furniturevillage.co.uk).

Charlie Harrison, Marketing Director at Furniture Village comments: “We are glad that so many children have been involved in the competition and it is heartening to see the great level of care and thought that went behind the winning inventions. Furniture Village salutes this next generation of entrepreneur inventors.”
