Derriford doctors host a successful cancer study day
Consultants from Derriford Hospital recently hosted a study day for specialists in the region, which focused on lung cancer and mesothelioma.
More than 40 delegates from across the peninsula, including consultants, registrars, cancer nurse specialists and research and chemotherapy nurses, attended the educational event at St Cuthbert’s Conference Centre, Buckfast Abbey on Friday 3 October, to hear from a variety of speakers.
The day, organised by Dr Dennis Yiannakis, Clinical Oncologist at Derriford Hospital, aimed to improve education and to update knowledge for multi-disciplinary team (MDT) members on lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Dr Yiannakis said: “I restarted this course this year based on encouragement from local MDT members for such a course. It was a good opportunity to improve knowledge about medical and clinical care for patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma, discuss organisational NHS changes and the availability of compensation benefits so as to ensure the south west remains a leading centre to treat lung cancer and mesothelioma.”
The day started with a talk from Jesme Fox, the Medical Director of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, a charity for lung cancer and mesothelioma patients. Lectures were then given on up-to-date histology, stereotactic radiotherapy, surgical care and techniques, compensation for mesothelioma patients, as well as on chemotherapy for lung cancer and mesothelioma.
