A pupil from Dartmouth Academy, part of Education South West, is celebrating after winning several medals at the recent Scottish Taekwondo Championship.

Alex Slade, from Paignton,  practises taekwondo and has done since 2018 with Taekwondo Torbay.  He began competing in 2019 at the British Championships and took home a Bronze medal at that event for his Taekwondo patterns.

He competed most recently in the TAGB Scottish Championship and he won not only a Bronze medal in the individual sparring category, but also a Gold for tag team sparring.  Alex is not stopping there and hopes to have completed his black belt by Christmas.

At Dartmouth Academy, it’s the school’s aim for all pupils to be inspired through their experiences in physical education and school sport so that their enjoyment leads to a commitment to an active lifestyle.

Physical Education at the school aims to promote health and well-being and provide high quality opportunities and outcomes in all lessons and extra-curricular sports.  Staff try to assist each individual to be the best they can be by providing a broad and varied curriculum.

Paul Girardot, Principal at Dartmouth Academy said:

“All the staff and pupils at Dartmouth Academy are so proud of Alex and the dedication he has shown in order to achieve such sporting success.  This focus will serve him well in all other areas of his life and I wish him all the best with regard to achieving his black belt soon!”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said:

“Many congratulations to Alex from everyone at the trust.  It’s brilliant to see local young people pushing themselves to be the best they can be.  At Education South West we value the important contribution that sports make to children’s lives as we know that being healthy and active is just as important as being academic and creative.”
