The organiser of Connaught@Christmas recently visited Sidmouth College to present funds raised from the event.

John Radford met with staff and students from Sidmouth College and Sidmouth Primary School armed with two cheques for £500, which will be used to help disadvantaged students access opportunities in music and art.

The £1,000 total was raised through ticket sales for the illuminations at the town’s Connaught Gardens last December. This inaugural event attracted around 5,500 visitors who were spellbound by the twinkling lights adorning architecture, trees, flora, structures and flower beds. Many also visited the Connaught@Christmas Food & Craft Village in Manor Road car park, where over 30 local food vendors and craft traders were kept busy with sales.

Musicians and singers from both schools performed on the bandstand in the gardens, much to the delight of visitors who were struck by the enthusiasm and energy of the young performers.

John said: “Having live music made the experience for everyone who came to see the illuminations even more special, adding an extra layer of atmosphere. It was genuinely lovely to watch groups of young people performing on stage with big smiles on their faces - despite the cold!

“These schools are clearly encouraging musical talent so it’s a real pleasure to support even more students keen to follow their interests.”

Other groups who took to the stage for Connaught@Christmas included Sidmouth Ukulele, Sidbury Choir, East Devon Rock Choir and Jurrazic Trad Jazz Band. Sidmouth Town Band had been due to perform but Storm Barra meant the first night was cancelled, along with their performance.

The event was a huge success, receiving many great comments and reviews. It is set to take place again this December, with dates and details to be confirmed. Ideas in discussion for Connaught@Christmas 2022 include additional festive scenes, quieter sessions for those with SEND - and there is talk of dog-friendly sessions too!
