The new Barum Knoll development in Barnstaple has celebrated a significant milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony marking the official construction of 105 much-needed new homes.

Situated on land in Pilton, only five minutes’ walk from Barnstaple town centre and right next to North Devon District hospital, this new community being built by local developer, Barratt David Wilson Homes, has a strong focus on sustainability and community integration.

The ceremony, held on 12th June, brought together key members of the Barratt David Wilson Homes project team and the Mayor of Barnstaple, Janet Coates, to place shovels in the ground for the first time.

Barum Knoll, which received planning permission in 2021, will feature 37 (35%) affordable homes. This development aims to create a vibrant and sustainable community with a focus on enhancing the local environment and biodiversity.

Key features of Barum Knoll include the planting of 54 new trees, over 2,000 native species-rich hedgerows and 3,000 ornamental shrubs and grasses, integrated bat and bird boxes throughout the development, and a dedicated children’s play area, ensuring a family-friendly environment.

Andrew Spicer, Managing Director of Barratt David Wilson Homes Exeter, said, "We are thrilled to break ground at Barum Knoll. This development is a significant step forward for Barnstaple, offering much-needed high quality and affordable housing and a commitment to environmental sustainability. Barum Knoll is not just about building homes; it’s about creating a community that lives in harmony with nature."

The Barum Knoll development represents Barratt Homes's ongoing commitment to building homes that meet the needs of the community while promoting environmental stewardship. Construction is now underway, and the first homes are expected to be available in 2025.

As construction progresses, Barratt David Wilson Homes looks forward to updating the public on Barum Knoll’s journey.
