'Adventures In Music’ for the under-fives at Museum and Art Gallery

A new series of world and folk music events at the City Museum and Art Gallery is offering under-fives and their grown-ups a unique experience where they learn about new sounds, instruments and cultures.

Adventures in Music runs on the last Friday of the month from 11am to 11.45am and features interactive sessions led by world class musicians.

The next event on the programme will take place on Friday 28 June and is called Indian Inspiration.

British-Asian clarinettist Arun Ghosh will be joined by Nilesh Gulhane on tabla, a type of Indian drum. Their performance will fuse West Country folk music with Indian music and jazz, and will even feature a brand new piece of music composed especially for the event.

Arun Ghosh has been described as ‘a leading light of the British jazz scene’. His performances are inspired by sounds as diverse as Indian folk music, jazz, hip hop and rock ‘n’ roll and reflect his rich geographical heritage which includes Calcutta, London and the North of England.

"The series has got off to a great start, with lots of families from our first event in April coming along again in May," said Danielle Rose, Adventures in Music producer. "The feedback has been really positive, with many parents and grandparents telling us this is the first opportunity the children they're bringing have had to listen to music like this live. They also appreciate the relaxed family atmosphere, where their children can move and dance along to the music.

"Having seen Arun Ghosh live before, I'm really looking forward to this next event at the end of June. Arun is an incredible performer with so much energy, I think the audience will really enjoy the session he'll be leading, which will include a combination of peaceful, meditative songs as well as some lively improvisations where the audience can join in."

Tickets for the Indian Inspiration event are priced at just £4.50 per adult and £3 per child. Places are limited and advance booking is strongly recommended. Tickets can be bought by cash or cheque from the City Museum and Art Gallery’s Welcome Desk (between 10am and 4pm Tuesday to Saturday) or from the We Got Tickets website. Any additional accompanying children under the age of two will not need a ticket.

The Adventures in Music programme has been developed by independent live arts events producer Danielle Rose and is supported by PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Plus…UK - a creative and professional development programme that provides funding to enable organisations and music producers to work together to organise live music events and projects. Technical support and equipment are being provided by Deep Blue Sound Music.
