Historic UK Celebrates 25 Years of Making British History Accessible to All!
January 2025 marks a milestone for Historic UK, the pioneering online platform dedicated to sharing the stories and heritage of British history. Founded in 2000 by two passionate history enthusiasts, the website celebrates its 25th anniversary as one of the UK’s leading resources for history lovers.
Historic UK was a trailblazer as the first website of its kind, designed to bring British history to life through engaging and factual storytelling. From the outset, its mission was clear: to make history captivating and accessible for everyone, combining quirky tales, iconic legends, and cultural insights into an immersive experience.
The History Magazine Section, often described as a “Horrible Histories for Adults,” showcases the weird, gruesome, and fascinating moments that textbooks tend to skip. Readers can explore stories of British eccentrics, unsung inventors, and legendary figures like Queen Boudica and the brave sailors of HMS Birkenhead, who introduced the “Women and Children First” protocol.
Complementing the historical focus is the Culture UK Section, which delves into quintessentially British habits, from the nation’s love of tea to debates about clotted cream and jam placement in a proper Devon cream tea.
Starting as a team of two, the founders quickly realised the scale of their ambition required help. Historic UK grew to include a diverse roster of contributors, such as Richard Rhys Jones, a veteran South African journalist with a flair for recounting the Anglo-Zulu Wars. Today, the site is supported by a global network of guest authors and experts, all united by a shared love of history.
With over 1 million page views each month, Historic UK has grown into the UK’s largest online history magazine. The team remains committed to keeping British history and culture freely available to all.
As Historic UK reflects on its 25-year journey, the team extends heartfelt thanks to its readers and contributors for making this milestone possible.
