Every year, The Spires College puts on a school production that all students can choose to take part in. This year, the Director (Mr Mearns) has picked Sister Act the Musical.

Without spoiling the plot, in the Musical, Deloris, who is the Protagonist, finds herself using a Convent for Witness protection. Whilst it might be different to her old life as a performer, Deloris finds herself settling into her new role as the Convent Choir Conductor. Overall, our take on Sister Act is packed full of vibrant colours and soulful music; something you can’t miss!

The student production is predominantly made up of The Spires College students but there are many other roles that help bring Sister Act to life. These include: the performers, staff and the crew. Whilst the performers fabricate Sister Act on stage, Teachers each run mini departments, such as the Marketing and Props Team, with Student Crews to help devise the show off-stage. Students from all years have been making props, building sets, designing costumes, marketing the show and even preparing to provide enticing refreshments on the actual night of performance! Furthermore, Sister Act contains many unforgettable numbers meaning every year talented musicians (teachers and students) come together to form a band and rehearse two times a week, creating amazing live music on the nights of performances.

We spoke to nine members of Sister Act as we are approaching the first show. First of all speaking with Mr Partridge (one of the leaders of the set building department). There were obvious developments in how much the set had been built; however, there was an undertone of panic as there was still much to do! When questioned on the team's progress Mr Partridge responded saying they are ‘very very busy’ and that there is ‘lots going on’ but they are ‘on track’. Fortunately, there are two student accomplices (Lily and Harley) who informed us they had been going to the sessions mostly twice a week since October to get the set built. So far, they have completed multiple parts of the set like the Stained Glass window, which is extremely impressive, and plan to construct the gigantic arch; that framework arrives on the 28th. They are all excited to get started on this!

Also, to fully understand how the Production is coming along we also spoke to the cast; including Deloris. The overall consensus is that Sister Act is coming along exceedingly well. More interestingly, the cast were more focused on how much they were enjoying being part of the production. Astrid and Ellie, both told us that they really loved the social aspect of being in a production saying ‘everyone always laughs with each other rather than at each other’. Perry also pointed out that Mr Mearns has done an amazing job as it is ‘his first year’ and told us that rehearsals have ‘good vibes’. In addition, the main character Deloris, who is played by Georgia, replied saying we have ‘put in a lot of work so you should buy tickets’. Lastly, Edgar reported that being part of the show is a ‘good way for Year 7s to integrate into College’.

Overall, it is universally clear that the crew and cast are on track to meet the deadline of the 10th of February and are having a fabulous time taking part in this year's production of. Tickets are available to purchase by the general public and more information on this is available on The Spires College website; we look forward to seeing you there!
