Jellyfish help to provide calming ward environment
A big thank you to Derriford Hospital’s League of Friends, for purchasing an artificial jellyfish tank for the patient day room on Hembury Ward.
Coming into hospital can be distressing, especially for those patients living with dementia, when routine and familiarity is broken. Many patients become disorientated, frustrated and can be agitated.
Hembury Ward have been working hard to improve the environment for their dementia patients, many of whom spend a considerable amount of time in hospital due to medical and social complications. The patient’s day room is designed to give a homely feel, as well as provide activities and visual prompts to encourage routine, stimulation and relaxation.
Sarah Corner, Ward Manager for Hembury Ward said: “We are so pleased that in addition to the books, pictures, games and puzzles that we have, we now have a jellyfish tank as well. We really can’t thank League of Friends enough for allowing us to have this.Sarah Corner
“There is research that suggests that exposure to tailored light significantly decreases depression and agitation. Patients who are calmer will sleep better and eat better.
“The jellyfish are very friendly and swim and sway in the filtered water, whilst the colour changing lighting adds to the fascination of this feature. At first glance, many patients and visitors are surprised to know that the jellyfish are not real and they have been warmly received by everyone as another small but important adjunct to improving dementia care for our patients here on Hembury ward.”
Margaret Salt, Chairman of the League said: “We are very pleased to be able to supply the jellyfish tank to the ward and have been told that the patients are absolutely thrilled with it.”
Derriford Hospital's League of Friends have been raising money for over 25 years and to date, the League has spent more than £1.5m on medical and other equipment for the Trust.
