When to replace your wooden sash window

Sash windows are a great addition to any home but trying to figure out when they need replacing can be a surprisingly difficult task. Nothing lasts forever in a home including the windows but when they are fitted correctly and by a professional such as Home Counties Joinery, they can last a long time, sometimes they can even last over 20 years without needing to be replaced. 

The most obvious sign that it might be time to replace them is when they are damaged or even fully broken. Broken windows are not only an eyesore but they can be a safety issue too, so without a doubt, you should really replace them if they do become damaged.  Broken windows will also lead to your home not being as energy efficient as it possibly can be causing you to need to pay more in heating bills than you are used to. 

If there is a draught coming from the sash window then that is also a common sign that you might need to think about getting the window replaced. Sometimes it might just be one window that you notice a draught with but if you start to notice that it is taking much longer than usual to heat your home up when you turn the heating on then that might also be an indicator that one or several windows have a draught issue. Similar to having a broken window, when you have a drought problem then you will most likely be spending more than you would like on your heating bills, getting the sash windows replaced will help with the drought problem. 

If you start to notice frequent instances of condensation building up on the inside of your windows then that will also be a significant indicator that you should probably get the sash windows replaced. Condensation that isn’t dealt with can cause the timber in the sash windows to start to rot and when there is too much moisture in the air you might end up with mould in your home.  Mould can cause really serious health issues so you really would like to stop that from happening by dealing with the condensation by getting the sash windows replaced. 

If the sash windows aren’t providing your home with strong UV protection from sunlight, then you might want to get the windows replaced. The tell-tale sign that they aren’t providing the protection is that the furniture in your home is starting to fade. When the windows aren’t helping with the UV rays then the colour might start to fade from your furniture.

New issues with noise coming into your home might also mean that there is an issue with your sash windows. If you are used to there being very little noise pollution coming in from outside having to then live with loud noises that you aren’t used to can be really annoying. If the sash windows aren’t performing as they once did and are now letting in a significant amount of outside noise, then getting them replaced should help with that issue. 

There are definitely more signs than these that might arise over time. So, if you start to have these issues or any other problems then you should probably consider getting your sash windows replaced.
