Not a lot of bottles in the banks

Cheers!  Residents efforts to recycle bottles through their doorstep collection has been so successful, some areas no longer need bottle banks.

A total of 18 bottle banks will be removed by the end of the month as a result of a drop in amount of glass going in them – it is down from over 200 tonnes a month to about 60 tonnes.

Stickers have been put on the banks that will be removed from the end of October to let people know that the banks will be gone.

There will still be 26 sites across the city with banks and the Council will continue to keep an eye on how much they are being used.

Over the last year an extra 898 tonnes of glass have been collected through the doorstep recycling scheme.

Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet Member for Street Scene said: “This is a great indication of how popular the glass collection with the green bin recycling scheme is with residents. We’ve made it as easy as possible for people to recycle and will continue to encourage them.

“When these banks were first introduced we didn’t provide the service we are able to now. “

Removing the banks will lead to service efficiencies as the teams will no longer need to visit all the sites.

As part of the continuing programme of improvements, the Council is looking at introducing more textile recycling banks. Textiles are not part of the Council’s doorstep recycling contract, but there are a number of textile banks provided by charities.
