Check your Christmas and New Year bin collections
Christmas and New Year holidays are just around the corner and Plymouth City Council wants to make sure you know what day your bin collections are, and what you can do with all that Christmas packaging!
As part of Plymouth’s ongoing recycling campaign, the Council wants to make sure that local people know what they need to do when.
Councillor Mike Leaves, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and the Environment, said: “Christmas is a time of giving – it is also a time when you can sometimes get more packaging than you know what to do with!
“It’s important that people know what days their bin collections will be over the festive period and also what goes in each bin.
“We’re dreaming of a green Christmas, and don’t forget that a lot of your Christmas packaging can be recycled. Most cardboard, paper and plastic items can be recycled, so it’s important that you know what you can put in your green bins or bags and also what needs to go in the brown bin.”
Because this year Christmas Day is a Monday and Boxing Day is a Tuesday, this means that your bin collections will be two days later than usual during Christmas week.
New Year’s Day is on a Monday, which means that your bin collection day will be one day later than usual during the first week of January.
Bin collections will then be back to normal during the second week of January (week commencing 8 Janaury 2018). You can check your bin days here.
Recycling information:
- Wrapping paper – you can recycle standard wrapping paper in your green bin, but not foil, glitter or shiny wrapping paper. Also, please remove anything such as bows, labels, string and ribbon, as well as sticky tape.
- Plastics – you can recycle hard plastic packaging from toys and other goods, along with other items such as plastic shampoo and shower gel bottles from toiletry sets in your green bin. However, you can’t recycle softer plastics such as plastic bags, polystyrene and plastic film.
- Cardboard – most types of card can be recycled including your Christmas cards, cardboard packaging for toys and other gifts, and cardboard egg boxes.
- Polystyrene packaging – this can not be recycled at home so you will need to put it in your brown bin or take it to one of our recycling centres.
- Christmas trees – Following the success of last year’s trial scheme, wood-chipping machines will be on a mini tour of Plymouth to dispose of Christmas trees responsibly. Once arrangements have been finalised we will be adding the details here.
- Food – we do not separate food waste collections, so you will need to put any in your brown bin, although we also have advice on home composting here and information on how to manage food waste is available here from Love Food, Hate Waste.
