Plymouth City Council will be launching Year 3 of Thrive Plymouth, the city’s ten year framework for improving health and wellbeing, and reducing health inequalities on Wednesday 16 November.

Launched in 2014, the first year of Thrive Plymouth focused on workplace wellbeing, engaging with 22,000 employees represented by 35 of the city’s largest employers, while  year 2 saw collaboration between the Council and more than 50 local schools to encourage healthier lifestyles.

Year 3 will see the city focus on ‘localising the One You’ campaign. One You is a ground-breaking campaign launched by Public Health England to help people improve their lifestyles. One You encourages adults to take part in a free online quiz called ‘How Are You’, which provides personalised recommendations and directs people to tools and advice created by experts to help them take action where it’s most needed.

Speakers at this year’s launch event include:

Dr Ruth Harrell, Interim Director of Public Health, Plymouth City Council
Councillor Lynda Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care
Helen Hampton, Deputy Director of Partnerships Marketing, Public Health England
Russ Moody, Health and Wellbeing Programme Lead, Public Health England
Paul Burton, Editor, Plymouth Herald

Dr Ruth Harrell, Interim Director of Public Health for Plymouth City Council, said: “Thrive Plymouth aims to generate collective action for social change around the main lifestyle choices that determine health and wellbeing. If we are free from tobacco, drink less alcohol are physically active and eat healthily – we will feel better now and live longer, healthier lives.

“Although we originally launched Thrive Plymouth 2 years ago, it felt timely this year with the launch of Public Health England’s One You campaign, which mirrors many of our own aims, to bring the two campaigns together locally.

“When One You was launched nationally earlier in the year, our efforts in Plymouth with the Plymouth Herald and Public Health England, meant that the Herald was the no.1 regional media referrer in the country for the How Are You quiz, with more than 2,000 referrals. We hope to build on this success and continue to help people to make the healthier choices.”

Councillor Lynda Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Plymouth City Council, said: “We’re very pleased with the success of Thrive Plymouth so far and all the partnerships that have been forged, and we look forward to moving into Year 3.

“Some of these relatively small lifestyle choices such as eating well, drinking less alcohol, quitting smoking or being more active can double your chances of being healthy at 70 and beyond. So if you’re interested, come on board and join our fight to make Plymouth healthier.”
