This retro and delicious steak is packed full of flavour
Gammon steak is a 70s staple which has stood the test of time for good reason. Not only is gammon absolutely packed full of flavour, but it’s also a hugely versatile meat which can be used in a variety of different dishes.
Gammon steak
Gammon steaks are usually sold in packs of two and may vary in shape and size. Some are long and thin, while others are practically circular. A gammon steak will often have a layer of rind and fat around one side which will need trimming off to stop the meat curling as it cooks. This is best done with a pair of kitchen scissors.
For the best quality gammon steak, consider online butchers like the Dorset Meat Company who can deliver high quality cuts of gammon straight to your door. You can cook gammon steak in several different ways, from frying pans to ovens. Below, we’ve outlined some key tips as well as our favourite gammon recipes.
Pan-fried gammon steaks
To cook your gammon steak in a pan, you’ll need 2 teaspoons of rapeseed oil. Start by heating the oil in a frying pan large enough to hold your gammon. Before placing your gammon steak in the pan, season it thoroughly on both sides. Then place your gammon in the pan and cook on a medium heat for five minutes. It should have started to brown slightly.
Turn your steak over and cook for another five minutes. If they are not cooked through, cook for another minute on both sides.
Oven-baked gammon steaks
If you’d rather bake your gammon steak in the oven, the process is just as simple. You’ll need exactly the same amount of oil: two teaspoons of rapeseed.
Begin by heating the oven to 200C or 180C if you’re using a fan. This is around gas mark 6. Coat your gammon steak in oil and put it on a baking sheet, seasoning well on both sides.
Cook for around seven minutes and then turn over and cook for another seven minutes. They should be browned and fully cooked through.
