Plymouth Gin takes world title for best Martini
Plymouth Gin® has been awarded first place in the Martini category at the prestigious Tastings.com World Cocktail Championships, beating off stiff competition and championing Plymouth as the city which produces gin for one of the most recognisable drinks in the world.
Founded in 1793, Plymouth Gin® has been at the heart of the city for over 200 years and is enjoyed all over the world. Crafted by a small talented team of artisan makers in the UK’s oldest working gin distillery, Plymouth Gin® is produced using a copper pot still that has made every drop since at least 1906, guaranteeing the unique smooth and citrus led taste that is known around the world.
Plymouth Gin’s Master Distiller, Sean Harrison, searches the world every year for the highest quality botanicals, from independent farmers, that stay true to the original recipe. The array of botanicals used are juniper, angelica root, lemon peel, green cardamom, orange peel, coriander seed, and orris root. These seven natural, hand selected, botanicals provide a full bodied yet smooth gin with fresh citrus and gentle green spiced top notes, making it ideal for a spirituous cocktail like the martini.
Plymouth has remained a mainstay in cocktail books throughout the decades and was included in the original recipe for the dry martini, making it a gin of choice for bartenders. Fast-forward to 2018 and the recipe that clinched the win at the Tastings.com Championships called for two parts Plymouth Gin, three-fourths part Noilly Prat Vermouth.
“It’s great to see Plymouth Gin being recognised at a global level. Its gentle and complex flavour profile has remained a favourite among bartenders worldwide as the ideal gin for cocktails.” said Karen Ehrlich, Global Brand Director, Plymouth Gin. “We’re really proud of our rich heritage in the city and this win will certainly help to put Plymouth firmly on the map. It is a great triumph which truly demonstrates the fantastic talent and expertise of our team of local gin makers.”
