Spaces on hundreds of free, fun and exciting courses for young people as part of this year’s Summer Mix programme are filling up fast.

Over 1,200 young people aged 11 to 19 – or 11 to 25 for those with a disability or special learning needs - have already signed up to try something new during August. 120 of the 198 courses on offer are now fully booked.

Plymouth’s fantastic Summer Mix 2013 is in its fourth year and its popularity continues to grow. But with double the amount of courses, this year’s programme offers a whole new range of new experiences for young people to try.

Courses and activities are booked on a first come first served basis, so young people wanting to put their name down are being urged to log on and enrol now.

Just some of the activities still up for grabs include:

  • Step Up For Respect - traditional Indonesian RESPECT kite making and taking part in the Plymouth Respect festival.
  • Introduction to Creative Writing workshops - published author, Babs Horton, will lead the sessions at Plympton and Plymstock Libraries.
  • Film In A Day and Magazine In A Day courses – workshops with Fotonow to learn all the elements of film and magazine production.
  • Start up business courses – there are a range of courses designed to help young people turn an idea into a business.
  • Workshop with explorer Henry Evans – interactive exploring experience.
  • Delivering sport to young people with disabilities – develop the skills to give you the confidence to communicate and work with young people with disabilities.
  • A day with the Dartmoor Rangers learning about working in conservation.
  • Getting Global - choose the issues that inspire, anger or excite you and using art, drama, the internet and teamwork to explore the things you think need to change in the world.

Young people need to register on the Summer Mix website and apply for courses online. Courses won’t be confirmed until a signed consent form is received, which can be downloaded from the website. They can view all courses on the website and download a brochure.

Cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Nicky Williams, said: “Interest in this year’s Summer Mix courses is huge. We’re on track to fill them all, as we did last year, so I’d urge young people to log on to the website as soon as they can to get their names down for any courses they want to try.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity for young people to try something new, refine their skills or simply fill their time during the six weeks holiday with something fun…for free!”

Once young people have enrolled they will find out very quickly if they have been successful in their course choices when they are sent emails confirming the details.

Summer Mix 2013 has been organised and funded by Plymouth City Council’s Youth Services. It has been supported by local businesses and other organisations who are providing courses and activities – see the full list of providers in the Summer Mix 2013 brochure.

Enrolment forms for courses are available now at www.summermix.co.uk, along with copies of the brochure detailing exactly what’s on offer and when. Those young people without access to a computer can call 306163 or 306596.
