Volunteers needed to help blind community in Devon

A national charity is appealing for volunteers to come forward and help the blind people it supports in the Exeter and Plymouth areas.

British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) provides specially adapted audio equipment to visually impaired people across the UK.

The charity is looking for radio support volunteers, whose role would be to visit people with sight loss in their homes throughout Exeter and Plymouth, install their new radio and teach them how to use it as well as provide on-going support where needed.

The role involves a small amount of admin and there would be one to two visits a month, each taking around two hours to complete.

It would suit someone patient who is a good communicator with a full, clean driving licence.

All expenses incurred by the volunteer will be reimbursed and full training will be provided by the charity.

BWBF Regional Development Manager Brad Samuels said: “We are really keen to get some volunteers on board in Exeter and Plymouth as there are blind people in the area who are waiting to receive their radio from us.

“This role is a great opportunity for someone who would like to gain valuable experience within a national charity.

“You’ll be providing support to visually impaired people within your community and also improving your employment prospects by enhancing your CV.

“Volunteering is a really rewarding way to give something back to your local community and a good opportunity to meet new people.”

The radios are provided on free loan to people who are registered blind or partially sighted, over the age of eight, resident in the UK and in receipt of a means-tested benefit.
