Bettesworths, a leading name in the commercial and residential property industry, is proud to commemorate its 80th business anniversary.

Over the course of eight decades, Bettesworths has established itself as one of the most highly regarded property practices in the South West, with an impressive track record of successfully advertising and closing sales on thousands of properties across the region, including The TurfSouth Devon Chilli Farm and most recently, Kents Cavern

Founded in 1943 by Maureen and Bernard Bettesworth in Torquay, the firm has grown into a family dynasty spanning three generations and continues to make waves in the South West, with an unwavering reputation in commercial and residential property.

Maureen became a trailblazer in a male-dominated industry, quickly establishing herself as the first female auctioneer and hotel agent in the UK. Her accomplishments extended beyond the firm as she became the first female Chair of the Devon and Cornwall Branch of The Valuers' Institution, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire professionals, clients, and the public.

Throughout the second generation, the firm witnessed significant growth with Barney Bettesworth, Maureen and Bernard's eldest son, joining as a partner. Barney, a qualified Chartered Surveyor, spearheaded the establishment of the pub division in the 1980s, which went on to become a reputable hospitality sector of the business, managing the sales of hotels, pubs and holiday properties throughout the South West of England,

Mick Bettesworth joined the firm in the late 70s and was later joined by Paddy who brought with him expertise gained from a Master's Degree in Land Economy at Cambridge. Together, they navigated the firm through challenging times, expanding its regional influence and ensuring its resilience during the recessionary years of the early 90s.

The turn of the millennium marked the entry of the third generation into the Bettesworths legacy. Barney's son, Matt, joined the firm in 2001, adding his experience from London-based firms Gerald Eve & Fleurets. In 2007, Matt’s brother, Paul became the second member of the third generation to join the practice, armed with a degree in Land Management. Both Matt & Paul are qualified Chartered Surveyors.

Together, Matt and Paul steered the firm through economic downturns and industry challenges, adapting its services and ensuring sustained growth and diversification while upholding the Bettesworths brand's reputation.

Beyond their work in the property industry, Bettesworths are proud to be a part of a number of community endeavours, including sponsoring Stroke City, a small football club that aims to bring rehabilitation and social benefits to those who have suffered a stroke. They also have a close partnership with Torquay Athletic Rugby Club and pursue a number of personal challenges to aid local causes, including 9-year-old Barney Bettesworth’s triathlon challenge which raised over £4,000 for Ukraine refugees.

The team recently held a gathering to commemorate this momentous occasion, bringing together friends, family and work colleagues at Below Decks on Torquay Harbour to celebrate.

Bettesworths' commitment to innovation, teamwork, and embracing the future has been the driving force behind its progress. As Bettesworths celebrates 80 years of excellence, the firm remains committed to delivering bespoke property solutions and upholding its reputation as a trusted partner in the South West's property market.

With a rich heritage, an outstanding team of property experts and a continued focus on innovation and service, Bettesworths looks forward to a future filled with further success and growth.
