Scientists to host dementia information day
Leading South West dementia scientists, including those from Plymouth University, will come together on Thursday 3 September to hold a free public event in Devon to discuss current dementia research. The day will involve short talks from clinicians and researchers, as well as interactive workshops and an opportunity to ask the experts questions about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The meeting is organised by members of the Alzheimer’s Research UK South West Network Centre in partnership with the National Institute for Health Clinical Research Network (CRN) for the South West peninsula.
Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, funding research into the causes of dementia, diagnosis, preventions and treatments. They fund more than £26 million of dementia research across the UK, including pioneering work currently underway at Plymouth University and the University of Exeter. This funding is allowing scientists in the region to uncover more about the diseases that cause dementia and contribute to the global effort to put a stop to the heartbreak the condition brings.
Dementia experts from a range of backgrounds will be on hand for the day. They include Dr Stephen Pearson, Consultant in Older Age Psychiatry at Devon Partnership NHS Trust, Dr Oleg Anichtchik a neurobiologist from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, studying how proteins build up in the brain in dementia; and Dr Ray Sheridan who is a SW CRN clinical specialist research lead and consultant physician in care of elderly people.
Dr Pearson said: “Dementia is perhaps the greatest medical challenge of our times. We called this event ‘Research is hope in dementia’ and hope those who attend this event will be informed and reassured hearing about the dementia research taking place locally and nationally. This is an opportunity for people living with dementia, carers and members of the public to ask scientists and clinicians about opportunities to participate in research studies and find out about the progress being made to improve the treatment and quality of life of people with dementia.”
Robin Brisbourne from Alzheimer’s Research UK, who will also speak at the meeting, said: “Over 84,000 people in the South West are living with dementia and many more have loved ones with the condition. This event is a fantastic opportunity for people who live in Devon and the surrounding areas to hear about the vital dementia research taking place on their doorstep. All the speakers are keen to share their insights into causes, risk factors, treatments, as well as the latest dementia research findings.”
The free event will take place from 9:30am-4pm on Thursday 3 September at Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre, Buckfastleigh, Devon. Free parking, lunch and refreshments will be provided. Booking in advance is essential because places are limited. To find out more and book contact David Walker on 01752 431386 or email: CRN.SWP@nhs.net.
