Open day with a difference at Weston Mill Crematorium.

The City Council is hosting an open day on Saturday 13 May at Weston Mill Crematorium. The public are invited to take a behind the scenes look around the facilities with a tour of the Crematorium.

Councillor Mike Leaves the Cabinet Member responsible for Bereavement Services said: “Death is something that affects us all greatly but we really don’t want to think about it – let alone talk about it. The open day promises to be a fascinating and enlightening experience.”

As well as a look behind the scenes visitors can also find out more about memorial schemes available at the crematorium to remember a loved one. Tours of the cemetery will include visits to some interesting memorials including that of Dame Aggie Weston; the first woman ever given a full ceremonial Royal Navy funeral and Edward Claude Derwin who famously survived an encounter with WW1 German fighter pilot the Red Baron.

Karen Jennings, Bereavement Services Manager added: “We wanted to hold an event to give people the chance to meet employees at the crematorium, dispel any common myths and show the public how we look after their loved ones from the service to final resting place. I hope that the people of Plymouth will find this open day informative and any questions will be answered by our staff on site.”

The Bereavement Service open day runs from 10am to 2pm on Saturday 13 May, refreshments will be available to purchase throughout the day.
