Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service had the pleasure to be involved with the fifth annual Plymouth Blue Light Day for people with learning disabilities. The theme for this year was sun, beach and water safety.

Dave Evans, Community & Workplace Equalities Project Officer for the Fire Service commented: “We are very proud every year to support Blue Light Day in Plymouth. This event enables adults with learning disabilities to be made aware of the services and organisations that are available to help and support them. It also empowers people to take on their own safety by raising awareness.”

The Fire Service had a fire engine on site, as well their education vehicles which proved popular. Devon and Cornwall Police and the South Western Ambulance Service also provided a range of vehicles, including the police diving boat.
An array of stands provided advice in an informal setting for the variety of people that attended. Information was available on keeping fit, staying safe and healthy around water as well as the opportunity for some accessible beach sports. The event was also attended by the Alison Hernandez, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall as well as Fire Authority Member, Martin Leaves.
Self-Advocacy Project Officer Jill Singh, for Plymouth People First said: “Blue Light Day gives the ideal opportunity for lots of joint partnership working to promote safety messages for adults with learning disabilities.”

Marc House, Community Safety Prevention Manager from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said “Today has been a fantastic event that really bought together all of the local key agencies for the benefit of truly vulnerable people in the community. It gives everyone the opportunity to engage, educate and make people safer, not just in Plymouth but further afield as well. I’m also delighted that the event has been so well supported by Fire Authority Member, Martin Lewis and Alison Hernandez, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall.”

The day was enjoyed by all providing education in a safe and fun environment.
