New surgery and homes to be built on West Hoe
A brand new surgery and homes are to be built on West Hoe in Plymouth.
West Hoe Surgery will be getting a brand new expanded building to cater for more patients, and there will also be 14 new homes. The greenlight has now been given to go ahead with the new doctors surgery, eight town houses and six apartments.
West Hoe Developments are due to purchase the existing surgery from the doctors and the plan is to let it to another healthcare provider.
The plan is for West Hoe Developments to buy the existing surgery building and let it to another healthcare provider. Plymouth City Council which owns the land and the car park, has sold the land to the developers.
Jo Lloyd-Davies, Practice Manager for West Hoe Surgery, said: “The Doctors of West Hoe Surgery are very excited about our plans to move to bigger accommodation.
“Our existing surgery building has served the needs of the local population well since 1991, but we need more space to accommodate the increase in nearby housing and also to enable us to provide an increasing range of services, and train the next generation of GPs.
“We are committed to offering the best possible NHS healthcare to our population and the increase in space will allow this to happen.”
Councillor Ian Tuffin, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care for Plymouth City Council said: “We are delighted that the patients at West Hoe Surgery will be able to have a brand new purpose built surgery that will be future-proof and cater for more patients, with the latest modern facilities. The city is growing and it is essential that we have the health and other infrastructure in place to support local people.”
Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Cooperatives and Housing, said: “This is a beautiful area of the city, right down by the Hoe and as well as the GP practice to serve local people we are pleased that there will be 14 modern new-build homes. We want to help more people in Plymouth get the home they want and our Plan for Homes aims to deliver 5,000 new homes for local people between now and 2021.”
Michael O’Shaughnessy from West Hoe Developments, said: “We are two local businessmen, one of whom was born here and still lives in the area. We are very keen to work with Plymouth City Council after being given this opportunity to produce a high quality new build with the new surgery, eight townhouses and six apartments. We feel that this development will lift the whole area for residents and tourists alike and will be part of the community for many years to come.
It is anticipated that work on the new surgery will begin towards the end of April 2016.
