A new dedicated transit site for Gypsies and Travellers has been approved.

The 16 pitch site at Broadley Park, which is being funded with a £790,000 grant from the Homes and Communities Agency, has been approved by Plymouth’s City Council’s Investment Board and signed off on Friday 27 November.

Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “This is fantastic news as it will give us more power to be able to respond to local residents’ concerns and move on Travellers.

“Having a dedicated site like this means we will be able to move them on much more quickly.

“We would like to thank the Homes and Communities Agency for providing all of the funding to enable us to deliver this scheme.”

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Cooperatives and Housing for Plymouth City Council, said: “We identified Broadley Park as our preferred location for a transit site following an exhaustive examination of 60 possible locations, including those suggested by the public through our consultation process.

“Plymouth City Council will work closely with South Hams District Council in progressing the scheme, and engagement with local businesses and landowners will be key to this."
