Museum on Tour celebrates Dartmoor Archaeology

Get a real ‘hands on’ experience with Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery’s Museum on Tour this July. Dartmoor National Park is hosting this exciting heritage event at its award winning Visitor Centre in Princetown on Saturday 15 July 2017.

In celebration of the Festival of Archaeology there’ll be lots of hands on activities - have a go at making Bronze Age inspired beads, pinch pots and more and try your hand at sorting out real archaeological artefacts!

Be inspired by the Finding Prehistory exhibition, find out more about the Bronze Age on Dartmoor and meet Museum staff and members of the Plymouth Archaeological Society.

This great family fun event is FREE of charge and runs between 10.30 -12.30 and 1.30 – 3.30 at the National Park Visitor Centre, Princetown. No need to book a place – just drop in on the day!

Co-ordinated by the Council for British Archaeology, the Festival of British Archaeology offers hundreds of events nationwide, organised by museums, heritage organisations, national and country parks, universities, local societies, and community archaeologists.

The exhibition Finding Prehistory is a partnership between Dartmoor National Park Authority and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. It displays a collection of Bronze Age artefacts from the Museum and will be hosted at the Visitor Centre whilst the Plymouth History Centre (working title) is under construction.

The History Centre is a major scheme that will transform the existing Central Library and St Luke’s Church buildings into a new cultural and heritage attraction that highlights Plymouth and its place in the world. Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery is currently closed so this redevelopment work can take place.

The History Centre is set to open in spring 2020 as part of Plymouth’s commemorations for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims setting sail aboard the Mayflower for the New World. It will include large archive, learning and research spaces as well as a series of impressive galleries that will showcase permanent collections, artistic projects and commissions.
