Top Plymouth design team to help environment with new techniques

Creating meaningful, sustainable packaging is the Holy Grail for many design companies. It’s a goal which ‘Until The Cows Come Home,’ based at Plymouth Science Park, aims to help firms achieve.

Jamie Billing, Technical Director, says minimising the negative impacts of rubbish on the environment requires a holistic approach to the issue.

“There are simple types of design techniques that are not currently filtering through into the project arena,” explains Jamie.

“We embrace Whole Systems Thinking which focuses on considering all aspects of production, infrastructure, transport and the eventual end of the product’s life.”

“By scoping out the whole project, you are able to make a life cycle assessment at every stage of production which can help to lessen the environmental impact.”

Jamie’s background is predominately lecturing in product design at top universities and also in advising a number of international companies.

His work has led to a number of accolades including praise for the creation of ‘second life’ packaging which has even included an Easter Egg box which easily transforms itself into a puppet show toy for children.

“Until The Cows Come Home sees everything in a lateral way so we can produce a life cycle assessment at every stage of a product’s journey and so adapt production techniques which, ultimately means, there’s less waste and less pollution. The goal is to benefit the consumer, manufacturer and the planet.”

Jamie works alongside his wife, Tracy Cordingley, who is the company’s Creative Director.

Both have specialist knowledge to create perfect 3D designs and have worked with a number of top design agencies across the UK – where they scooped a number of awards.

“Plymouth Science Park has an excellent reputation and strong connections to the university. We are sure being based on the site will help our long-term goals of helping like-minded businesses to try to reverse the negative environmental impact which we are seeing at the moment.”

One of the key benefits of working on the Plymouth Science Park is its own environmental credentials with the recent opening of Chamberlain House. Formerly known as One Research Way, the design has led the way for sustainability in the south west. Its’ construction techniques benefit the environment with high tech energy efficient technology and natural heating systems.
