A talented apprentice from Plymouth has taken been crowned runner up at the regional finals of this year’s prestigious EEF Future Manufacturing Awards.

Samuel Newton, aged 24, who works for Babcock, fought off competition from across the region to take silver in the Higher Level Final Year Apprentice Award. Judges said they were overwhelmed by the quality of apprentices nominated this year, making Samuel’s achievement even more of an accolade.

Samuel took silver after impressing judges with his dedication to his apprenticeship and determination to pursue a career in manufacturing.

The award recognises the outstanding contribution being made by manufacturing apprentices across the region. It is highly-respected and hotly contested with winners selected by a panel of judges drawn from business leaders, industry experts and academics.

Samuel Newton, apprentice at Babcock, says: “I’m delighted to have been recognised in this way for doing something I genuinely enjoy and that is setting me up for my future. I’m only at the very start of my career in manufacturing, so to receive silver at these awards is a real boost and will motivate me even more.

“My apprenticeship is challenging and rewarding and I hope my success encourages others to think seriously about taking up an apprenticeship in manufacturing too.”

Terry Scuoler CBE, CEO at EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, says: “Samuel deserves this recognition and won the judges over with his hard work, enthusiasm and dedication. With such a high calibre of candidates this year, Samuel’s success is even more of an achievement.

“Manufacturing is the lifeblood of the economy and will require a supply of talented apprentices to ensure the sector’s continued success. It’s great to see Samuel’s efforts being recognised and I wish him the best of luck with his career in manufacturing.”
