From improving staff retention to boosting business growth – learning and development has numerous benefits. But all too often it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.

That’s why, last year the City & Guilds Group launched the Princess Royal Training Awards – a programme which celebrates the impact of training and development on business performance.

Those who apply are measured against three hallmarks of excellence:

1. Training/learning and development is integral to business performance.
2. The programme is delivered efficiently and effectively.
3. The programme has an impact on the success of the organisation and its people.

Last year, 33 organisations reached the standard and received an Award at a reception hosted by HRH The Princess Royal at St James’s Palace. Recipients ranged from prestigious car manufactures, to healthcare organisations to charities. Organisations of all sizes were represented but with one thing in common – a commitment to developing their people which led directly to business success.

Among the recipients was Sidmouth-based, The Donkey Sanctuary which was recognised for the leadership programme it implemented in response to ambitious growth targets. The innovative programme is now embedded in the organisation’s culture and has ensure managers are prepared and confident to deliver ambitious objectives.

This is just one example of how learning and development has improved business performance.

The Awards, now in the second year, are open for entry until 31st March and they are free to enter. Businesses of all sizes and from all sectors are encouraged to apply.
