The Family Law Company has appointed Trainee Legal Executive Machaela O’Brien to its Plymouth team.

An Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) Machaela specialises in legal aid cases involving domestic abuse as well as private law children cases.

She has close links with domestic violence organisations in the region and extended her expertise and understanding with a Level 2 Certificate in Domestic Abuse through Barnardos.

With her CILEx Level 3 Diploma in Law and Practice already completed, Machaela is now studying towards the Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice.

Her career to date has been noteworthy; this year alone she was named one of Cornwall’s ’30 Under 30’; was highly commended for Paralegal of the Year in the Modern Law Awards; and was a finalist for Best Family Law Paralegal, National Paralegal Awards. Machaela is also Education Co-ordinator for Cornwall Junior Lawyers Division (JLD).

The Family Law Company Director, Derek Jordan says “We are pleased to welcome Machaela to the Private Law Children and Domestic Abuse team at our Plymouth office. It is a real testament to her commitment that such a talented young lawyer has chosen to dedicate herself to this demanding area of family law.

“Whilst always vital, following the Covid-19 situation the importance of specialist advice and support for domestic abuse clients has increasingly been recognised. Machaela’s addition to the team enables us to expand our capacity to provide the expert guidance that The Family Law Company is renowned for.”

Machaela adds “Domestic abuse has a devastating impact on so many people; joining a forward-thinking firm renowned for top quality expertise and passion for helping some of the most vulnerable in our society gives me the means to better assist victims and help them towards a better future.”

The Family Law Company is actively recruiting for both the Plymouth and Exeter offices after experiencing an upsurge of enquiries since the first lockdown in March.
